Credit Cards

Went out with Treena today (for reasons I can't disclose here -- Clue: it has something to do with bikinis) and while we were going around the mall I thought about credit cards and how I used to look down on people who are so dependent on them. Perceptions change, just like how I see credit cards now. This essay is about the evolution of Eunice with a credit card.

I only applied for one this year. I just thought I'd get one so I can purchase some stuff on e-bay. I swore to myself that I won't use it for anything else but online shopping. So there... the search began. I was surprised to know that there are soooooooooo many credit cards to choose from! I thought there were just like 10 credit cards, but whoa!!! And they all come in different shapes and sizes! I can't believe they even made cards you can use as a pendant!! Wow, and they all shout discounts, points and other privileges. After collecting brochures and printing stuff online, I finally saw a credit card that might also benefit the traveler in me.

Yes, I used it to buy a keychain and a watch online. I was so scared to try it, what with all the stories of people getting bankrupt and their identities stolen because of credit card fraud. I was also uneasy about the payment thing. Never in my life have I owed anyone anything and here I bought 2 things online and I have to pay for it 1 month after the purchase! The watch was just perfect but the keychain never arrived. I think I got traumatized by that so I don't shop online anymore.

So now what? What will I do with this credit card in my wallet that I won't ever use online anymore? Hmmm.. ok, I'll just use them to pay for bills. At least I'll still get points (sayang ang miles *wink wink*). --But online banking is much much more convenient!!!

*sigh* ok, I'll just use it when I treat my distributors for lunch. --It only happened thrice. And I felt weird and uneasy using the card in front of my distributors. I was embarassed for they might think I am not compensated enough to treat them with cash! Eurgh!!!

Fine, I'll just use them for dining with my friends. --Bah! When the bill comes, it's a race on the fastest person to extract the plastic money from her wallet! (sayang ang miles!!) Either that or we don't use it at all because the restaurant gives bigger discounts when you pay cash!

I'm running out of reasons to use my card now! I need the points, I need the miles!! There were 3 months this year where I got zero dues!!! So now I'm left with the reason why everyone has a card: SHOPPING!

I bought clothes, shoes, makeup, books and everything else I need to live the life of a yuppie! Wowee!!! So that's what makes the plastic money business boom! It's such a thrill to purchase an item you've been dying to get with your benjamins (in our case, the ninoys) still in your wallet!

Now I can't wait to get my bill for this month! Ack, hopefully it's still within budget. I'm sure I'll get a lot of flight miles from all the shopping I did, though. Can't wait to go abroad next using the miles that i earned and using my card for shopping again!! Maybe I'll get another card too. I heard there's another card offering flight miles points for another airline! :) Kewl!!!!
